As you’re probably aware, you’re now in an old French house in the

South West of France ☺

There will be many ways in which your stay here will be different from a rental house or serviced apartment in a major city.

A few examples could be:

- Lizards will be visible outside, and possibly a grass snake. Both are

harmless.

- At certain times of the year it’s quite possible you’ll notice a

cobweb on some of the beams. We try our best each week, but as fast as we clear them, they return!

- The house is around 200 years old and was completely re-wired a

few years ago, but on top of the existing wiring. Consequently

there are some light switches that don’t always operate the light

bulb that you would expect.

- Occasionally you may hear rustling in the eves of the house at

night. These nocturnal creatures are called ‘loir’ in French, or

edible doormice (!) in English. Whilst the sounds may give the

impression that they’re about to land on your head, they’re not in

fact in the house, but in the gap below the roof tiles. The sound is a

little alarming the first time you hear it, but we don’t want to get

rid of our furry guests, and in any event they’re a protected species

in France.

- Power cuts. A local (Dordogne) phenomenon. If you do have a

power cut it will usually revert in a few minutes, or often seconds.

Special Request: Please drop us a text, as the pool chorine system

will need a re-calibration when we next visit.

Very occasionally, we’re contacted by guests who were surprised by some of these things. We want everyone to have a fantastic holiday, and we certainly take issues such as cleaning and safety very seriously. But we also feel it’s important to stress that a relaxed frame of mind will help deal with many of these ‘quirks’.
